Several Uttar Pradesh ministers on Tuesday strongly criticised All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora over what they described as objectionable and slanderous remarks against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, warning her against using such language to gain public attention.
UP Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar even suggested that Bora needed the “right medicine” for what he described as her public theatrics.
The controversy erupted after a video of Bora making remarks against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at a public meeting went viral on social media.
In the video, the AISA activist accused the Uttar Pradesh government of harassing minorities and Dalits through bulldozer action. She also called Yogi Adityanath a “goon and rioter” while raising questions over alleged paper leaks, unemployment and other issues.
“He (Yogi Adityanath) calls himself ‘Yogi’ but has been only fooling and looting the people. He has made Gorakhpur a land of riots, which once used to be the place of Buddha and Kabir,” Bora was heard saying.
Her remarks angered several members of the state government, who criticised what they described as the declining standards of political discourse and cautioned against attempts to provoke the public through abusive language.
Rajbhar said those who believed that repeatedly targeting Yogi Adityanath would make them popular or help them establish a public connect would ultimately be disappointed.
“Those who provoke public sentiments with objectionable remarks have been shown their rightful place and others will also meet the same fate, if they resort to such tactics,” he said.
Taking a further swipe at Bora, Rajbhar advised her to meet a Bareilly-based cleric currently in jail, apparently referring to Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, who was jailed last year in connection with alleged incitement and instigation of violence, including riots and stone-pelting attacks on police personnel.
UP Minister Narendra Kashyap also condemned the remarks against the Chief Minister, saying some political leaders had lowered the level of public discourse by making disparaging comments against national leaders, including Yogi Adityanath.
He alleged that parties including the Samajwadi Party, CPI and CPI(M), driven by a desire to return to power, had crossed the boundaries of political decency and resorted to personal attacks against BJP leaders, including the Prime Minister.
Kashyap said such objectionable and derogatory remarks ultimately caused more harm to those making them than to their targets, adding that the same would apply in the case of Yogi Adityanath.
The remarks were reportedly made in Gorakhpur, where AISA had organised its ‘Gen Z Rising’ campaign. The initiative sought to engage young people on what the organisation described as the government’s unfulfilled promises and raise questions on issues including unemployment and accountability.
