Outgoing Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson has described his tenure at the Tata Group-owned airline as a “wonderful experience” and said it was a privilege to be part of the carrier’s long history.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the leadership transition, Wilson said he was pleased to hand over the airline’s leadership to his successor, Tewolde Gebremariam.
“Air India and India have been a wonderful experience. It’s been a privilege to be part of Air India’s long and proud history. I’m very happy to be handing over to Tewolde Gebremariam as my successor,” Wilson said.
He wished both Air India and India success as the airline continues its efforts to emerge as a world-class carrier.
Gebremariam is set to take charge as CEO and Managing Director after receiving the required government security clearances. Earlier this month, he told employees that he was determined to build a stronger future for the airline, using the acronym MAGA to say, “We will Make Air India Great Again.”
At a town hall attended by Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran and Wilson, Gebremariam highlighted the airline’s heritage, strong brand and growth potential.
Chandrasekaran said the airline’s priorities would include safety, rebuilding customer trust, operational excellence and financial discipline. He also referred to recent challenges, including geopolitical disruptions, airspace restrictions, fuel price volatility and the impact of the AI171 accident.
Air India has also faced operational disruptions recently. On September 13, flight AI431 was diverted to Lucknow due to unfavourable weather and visibility conditions, while a Bhopal-Delhi flight was diverted to Jaipur because of a technical issue, in accordance with laid-down procedures.
