The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday granted no immediate relief to former district judge Giribala Singh, who is in custody in connection with the death of her daughter-in-law and model-actress Twisha Sharma.
A single bench of Justice Ajay Kumar Nirankari sought the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) response to Singh’s bail application and granted the agency one week to file its reply. The matter has been listed for hearing after a week, and Singh will remain in custody until then.
Senior advocate Surendra Singh, appearing for Giribala Singh, sought bail citing her age and health condition. The defence argued that she had not committed any act making her liable for the alleged offence and that there was no material to show that she had instigated her daughter-in-law to die by suicide.
The defence also assured the court that Singh would cooperate fully with the investigation and comply with any conditions imposed if she was granted bail.
The CBI sought a week’s time to respond, saying it wanted to place the case diary before the court. According to the defence counsel, the agency has already filed its objection to the bail application.
Twisha Sharma died under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family had alleged foul play.
The CBI, which is investigating the case, filed a 636-page charge sheet in August against Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh.
Advocate Anurag Panday, appearing for Twisha’s family, said the next hearing is expected to focus on the CBI’s response and the case diary before the court considers the bail plea.
