Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday urged students to cultivate humility, a strong sense of responsibility and a commitment to the nation, drawing on the example of renowned scholar Sir Isaac Newton.
Addressing students at MGR University in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Sitharaman said even a brilliant scholar like Newton acknowledged the contributions and assistance of other scholars in achieving his success and making his discoveries.
“A brilliant scholar like Newton acknowledged that he required the assistance of various other scholars to achieve his success; he stated that it was through this collaboration that he was able to make his various discoveries. He expressed this with great humility,” the Finance Minister said.
She stressed that students should draw inspiration from Newton’s approach and recognise the role of others in their achievements.
“Therefore, it is crucial for students to cultivate humility and a sense of responsibility,” Sitharaman said.
She said humility should remain an integral part of students’ academic and professional journeys, while a strong sense of responsibility should guide their personal and professional growth.
Addressing graduating students, Sitharaman urged them to take up leadership responsibilities and keep the nation’s interests at the forefront as they begin their professional careers.
She emphasised that the security and strength of the country are fundamental to providing a stable future for its citizens.
The Finance Minister also encouraged graduates to pursue excellence while remaining humble and adapting to the rapid pace of technological change.
Her message to the younger generation, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, centred on combining leadership and ambition with humility, responsibility and a commitment to the country.
