Punjab Police’s Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has taken custody of Karamveer Singh, a close associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, after he arrived at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport following his deportation from Canada, officials said.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said Karamveer Singh allegedly provided logistical support and a hideout to Anmol Bishnoi in the US. He was wanted in an FIR registered in Mohali under relevant provisions of the IPC, Arms Act and Passport Act.
The AGTF had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him on September 3. According to the DGP, Singh has a criminal history involving cases related to murder, attempt to murder, robbery, extortion, Arms Act violations and other criminal activities.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish his wider criminal network and activities.
The development comes days after Punjab Police secured the extradition of fugitive Amritpal Singh, alias Amrit Dalam, a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, from Moldova.
The AGTF and Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), with assistance from Central agencies, coordinated the operation. Amritpal Singh is wanted in multiple cases involving murder, attempt to murder, offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act violations and narcotics-related offences.
Moldovan authorities detained him on February 24 while he was allegedly attempting to cross the Otaci state border towards Ukraine. The extradition process was subsequently initiated through OFTEC Punjab.
The Court of Chisinau granted his extradition to India on May 26, while his appeal was rejected by the Court of Appeal Centru on July 16, making the order final. Punjab Police took custody of him at Chisinau Airport and brought him to India, with his arrival at IGI Airport recorded on September 12.
The DGP had described the extradition as the first secured by Punjab Police from a European country, calling it a significant milestone in the fight against organised crime.
The operation was part of ‘Operation Eastern Reach’, a six-month intelligence-led international manhunt involving surveillance, intelligence gathering and coordination with national and international agencies.
