Telangana Police have arrested seven people in connection with the alleged ‘purification’ of roads near the farmhouse of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president and former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao in Erravalli, Siddipet district.
The accused include a former sarpanch of Vardarajpur village and six BRS leaders. Police took them into custody from a lodge in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday after tracing their location.
They were brought to Gajwel and produced before a magistrate, who remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. They were subsequently shifted to Siddipet jail.
According to police, the accused allegedly carried out ‘purification’ rituals using turmeric water on September 9, a day after Congress workers and Dalit organisations held a ‘Chavu-Dappu’ (funeral drum-beating) protest near KCR’s farmhouse.
The protest was held against alleged derogatory and abusive remarks made by two BRS MLCs against Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.
Following the protest, BRS workers allegedly sprinkled turmeric water on roads and other areas through which the protesters had passed. The incident triggered controversy, with the ruling Congress demanding strong action, alleging that the act amounted to an insult to Dalits.
Acting on a complaint from local Congress leaders, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Forensic evidence was also collected.
Police said the accused had been evading arrest and were finally traced to the Vijayawada lodge after one of them switched on his mobile phone.
The protest followed a September 7 incident at the Assembly gate, where a scuffle between BRS legislators and police allegedly led to the two BRS MLCs making derogatory remarks against the Speaker. Both were arrested the following day but were released later after a court order.
