The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday questioned Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s “silence” after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took action against aides of two senior Congress leaders in cases linked to alleged exam irregularities.
The BJP’s attack came after former Uttarakhand Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Harish Rawat resigned from two party posts following the ED’s seizure of a large amount of cash and jewellery from his personal assistant (PA), Chandan Singh Jeena.
The ED had also arrested on Monday Chetan Borghariya, former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, in connection with alleged illegal appointments of DSPs and Collectors through examination paper leaks.
Addressing a press conference, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj said the developments raised questions about Congress governments and their recruitment systems.
“It seems that the only business conducted in the Congress party’s so-called ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’, is that of corruption. I want to ask Rahul Gandhi, on one hand, he talks about students, but when people from his own party tamper with the future of the nation’s youth and students, does that ‘goonj’ fail to reach his ears?” she said.
Swaraj was referring to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron ki Goonj’ programmes, through which he has raised concerns over repeated NEET paper leaks.
She said the ED’s action in Uttarakhand, where it allegedly recovered assets and properties disproportionate to Jeena’s known sources of income during searches linked to the VPDO examination scam, raised “grave questions” about the recruitment machinery.
Referring to the arrest of Baghel’s former OSD in the alleged Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission (CGPSC) scam, Swaraj said the developments further raised concerns over the functioning of recruitment systems.
She also alleged that the son of a politician had recently been accused of taking “cut money” in outsourced recruitments in Himachal Pradesh.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Swaraj said, “You talk about big things like future of the students and unemployment, but when it comes to Congress party’s own leaders and serious questions over political patronage are raised, why do you become silent on it?”
Swaraj also criticised the Congress over the absence of the Chief Ministers of Telangana, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka from a dinner hosted during the recently held BRICS Summit.
She said national interest should take precedence over partisan politics and described the decision of the three Congress Chief Ministers to skip the dinner as “deeply distressing”.
According to media reports cited by Swaraj, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had initially accepted the invitation but later informed the government that he would not attend due to political compulsions.
“In their opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have they now started opposing Bharat Mata as well? Don’t you think that the BRICS was not a political platform of the BJP but rather a platform for India’s reputation?” she asked.
Swaraj said the decision by the three Chief Ministers to skip the invitation, at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was speaking about “Team India”, was “extremely shameful”.
