A man allegedly posing as a doctor with forged medical degrees has been arrested in Sonarpur area of South 24 Parganas district after police raided his chamber, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused, identified as Bishwaroop Acharya, was arrested on Monday night after police found multiple discrepancies in his educational credentials. He had allegedly been using fake MBBS and FRCS degrees while practising as a doctor.
According to police, Acharya introduced himself as an oncologist and charged patients Rs 800 per consultation. He was reportedly operating from around eight chambers and had recently opened another chamber at a house in the Ghasiara area of Sonarpur.
The house owner became suspicious of Acharya’s activities and approached the police, following which investigators began monitoring the premises.
Police then sent a decoy patient to the chamber before conducting a raid on Monday night. During the operation, officers found inconsistencies in Acharya’s identity and qualifications and arrested him.
“Officers went to Bishwaroop’s chamber disguised as a patient. It was evident in just one or two conversations that he was a fake doctor. All his degrees were fake. He was immediately arrested,” a senior police official said.
The official said investigators are now trying to establish how Acharya obtained the forged degrees and documents and whether other people were involved in a larger criminal network.
Acharya, who allegedly had been posing as a doctor for a long time, was produced before the Baruipur sub-divisional court on Tuesday.
Police are also investigating how he continued treating patients for such an extended period and whether any patients suffered harm as a result of his alleged malpractice.
