A 28-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by his uncle during a confrontation over a land dispute at Mansoorwal Kalan village in Zira sub-division of Ferozepur district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Gurwinder Singh. Police said he was allegedly shot three times by his uncle, Jaswinder Singh, who used his licensed pistol during the confrontation. The accused fled the scene after the shooting, prompting police to launch a manhunt.
According to preliminary information, the two families had been embroiled in a dispute over a few marlas of land for some time. The matter escalated around 11 a.m. when Gurwinder and Jaswinder came face to face and an argument broke out over the disputed property.
During the heated exchange, Jaswinder allegedly pulled out his licensed pistol and opened fire. Three bullets struck Gurwinder, killing him on the spot.
The shooting triggered panic in the village, following which police were alerted. Senior officers, including Zira Sadar SHO Inspector Gurpreet Singh, reached the spot and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.
After conducting preliminary proceedings at the scene, police sent the body for post-mortem examination.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events and gather evidence related to the shooting. Inspector Gurpreet Singh said police teams had been deployed to trace Jaswinder Singh and efforts were underway to arrest him.
Gurwinder was unmarried and is survived by his parents and a sister, according to information available.
