The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has sought an Action Taken Report from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) within three days over allegations of sexual harassment raised by female students against a professor.
DCW Chairperson Lata Gupta took suo motu cognisance of a video circulating on social media in which students alleged that they had submitted a complaint against the professor to JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit in May 2026, but no appropriate action had been taken so far, according to their claim.
Gupta said complaints of sexual harassment involving women or students must be handled fairly, promptly and sensitively in accordance with the law and prescribed procedures.
In its notice to the university, the DCW sought details of the action taken on the complaint reportedly submitted in May and asked whether it had been referred to JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) constituted under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
The Commission also asked JNU to state what action the ICC had taken if the complaint was referred to it. If no action had been taken, the university has been asked to provide the reasons for the delay.
The DCW said its objective was to ensure that complaints were properly examined through due process and that complainants were not denied access to justice because of administrative inaction or delay.
The university has been directed to submit the status of the inquiry and action taken by JNU and the ICC, along with relevant details, through an Action Taken Report.
The Commission said it would examine the report and, based on the facts and records available, take further necessary action in accordance with law.
