The Congress on Monday welcomed indications of improved India-China relations but sought greater transparency from the government over the reported reduction in the deployment of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The reaction came after the Defence Ministry’s annual report for 2025-26 said PLA deployment opposite India’s northern borders had reduced significantly during 2025. The report also said that diplomatic, political and military interactions between the two countries had contributed to greater stability along the frontier.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said India and China have a complex relationship involving trade, unresolved border issues and security concerns, making sustained engagement and trust-building essential.
“India and China have a complicated relationship. We have a relationship on multiple levels: we have relationships in trade, we have border disputes, and we have security concerns. Only constant engagement can address these issues,” Chidambaram said.
He added that if the government was claiming a reduction in Chinese troop deployment, it should provide details on the extent of the decrease.
“It’s only fair that they give specifics of the actual troop deployment decrease by the Chinese side, whether there are any incursions on Indian soil, and whether there are any kinds of fortifications built on the border,” he said, calling for transparency while welcoming continued engagement.
Congress MP Pawan Khera separately questioned whether Indian forces had regained access to the patrolling points they could visit in eastern Ladakh before May 2020.
“Before May 2020, our forces were able to patrol certain patrolling points in the Ladakh region. Are they able to patrol those points now or not? Has the status quo been restored or not?” Khera asked.
He said the Defence Minister, Defence Ministry or Home Minister should clarify the position.
According to the Defence Ministry report, 10 brigade-sized Combined Arms formations were deployed along the LAC and in traditional training areas during 2025. These self-sustaining formations comprise different combat arms, including infantry, armour, artillery and air defence.
The report said the Indian Army’s deployment across sectors along the LAC remained “robust, well poised and prepared” to deal with emerging contingencies.
It also highlighted the resumption and continuation of dialogue mechanisms between India and China aimed at addressing boundary-related issues and maintaining stability along the frontier.
