Reigning world champion and World No. 1 Sheetal Devi held her nerve in a dramatic shoot-off to win gold in the para compound women’s individual event, leading India’s impressive medal haul at the World Archery Para Series Stage III on Wednesday.
India finished the final day with two gold and four bronze medals.
Sheetal faced Kazakhstan’s Aizada Seidan in a closely fought final, with neither archer giving ground in the opening stages. Both produced perfect 30s in the first end before the scores were tied at 59 after two ends.
Aizada edged ahead by one point in the third end after scoring 28 to Sheetal’s 27. The fourth end ended 29-29, leaving the Indian trailing by one point heading into the final end.
Under pressure, Sheetal responded with a 29 while Aizada managed 28, bringing the scores level at 144-144 and forcing a shoot-off.
With gold at stake, Sheetal delivered a perfect 10. Aizada could only score nine, handing the Indian archer a dramatic victory.
Sheetal also won bronze in the compound mixed team event alongside Toman Kumar. The Indian pair defeated Iraq’s Sara Al Hamid and Abbas Kadim 157-145 in the bronze-medal match. They scored 39 in each of the first three ends before producing a perfect 40 in the final end.
Paralympic champion Harvinder Singh also played a key role in India’s success, partnering Bhawna to win gold in the para recurve mixed team event.
The Indian duo dominated China’s Liang Qiurong and Xia Lei in the final, securing a convincing 6-0 victory. Harvinder and Bhawna won the first set 35-31, the second 36-33 and completed the clean sweep with a 34-32 win in the third.
Bhawna later added another medal by defeating compatriot Rajshree Rathod 6-0 in the all-Indian bronze-medal playoff in the para recurve women’s event.
India also secured bronze in the para compound women’s individual event, with Sarita edging China’s Wang Huiting 141-140.
Toman Kumar claimed another bronze in the para compound men’s individual event after defeating Iraq’s Abbas Kadhim 143-138, earning his second medal of the tournament.
