India on Wednesday condemned the recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, particularly strikes targeting civilian and economic facilities, calling them “unacceptable” and warning that such actions undermine regional security and stability.
Responding to a media query on the reported attacks, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India condemned attacks on Saudi sovereign territory, especially the targeting of civilian and economic facilities.
He said such attacks “undermined regional security and stability” and threatened freedom of navigation in the Bab-el-Mandeb, making them unacceptable.
Jaiswal’s remarks came a day after Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned Houthi attacks targeting civilian and economic assets in Abha, Jazan, Khamis Mushait and Najran. The attacks reportedly injured 73 people, including women and children.
Saudi Arabia also condemned continued Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and threats to international maritime navigation.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom rejected what it described as the Houthis’ “hostile approach and criminal conduct” and reiterated its right under international law to take necessary measures to defend its sovereignty, national assets, citizens and residents.
It called for an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and civilian facilities, as well as threats to maritime navigation.
Saudi Arabia also urged the international community to fulfil its responsibilities and implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 2216 and 2722.
India’s statement comes amid continuing concerns over the impact of Houthi attacks on regional stability and maritime security in and around the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb.
