British singer Jay Sean has looked back on the journey of his iconic track ‘Dance With You’ as the song marked 23 years, recalling how he, Rishi Rich and Juggy D created it without any expectation of the impact it would eventually have on South Asians around the world.
Jay Sean, whose real name is Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, shared a glimpse of the song on Instagram. The track also featured in the 2003 film ‘Boom’, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Jackky Shroff, Zeenat Aman and Padma Lakshmi, among others.
“23 years ago, the three of us walked into a studio and made a song with no idea where it might lead. There was no strategy, no overthinking, just pure vibes,” he wrote.
The singer said the trio were simply making music that felt natural to them while bringing together the sounds and cultures that had shaped their identities.
“Dance With You” went on to become much more than the beginning of his career, Jay Sean said, adding that what matters most to him today is the connection the song developed with listeners.
He said the trio could never have predicted that their instinctive creation would resonate so strongly with South Asians across the world, become part of people’s memories and help shape a distinct sound and space for the community in music.
“That’s the incredible power of music,” he said, reflecting on how a song created from a feeling eventually takes on a life of its own once it reaches audiences.
Looking back more than two decades later, Jay Sean said he feels “nothing but gratitude” for the doors the song opened, the lives it touched and the journey it began.
He also praised his collaborators, calling Rishi Rich a “visionary” and recalling the many memories associated with Juggy D.
“23 yrs later, the journey and the music continues,” Jay Sean wrote.
