Iranian Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi has said 18 people were killed and 108 others wounded in overnight US strikes on the country, according to a statement published on the website of the Iranian President’s Office.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry separately condemned what it described as the latest US “acts of aggression”, saying Tehran remained determined to defend its independence, national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministry said the US government had again violated Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on Tuesday night by striking several civilian locations and service infrastructure. It said the attacks caused casualties among Iranian citizens and damaged public and private property, Xinhua news agency reported.
The US Central Command said earlier on Wednesday that its forces had “successfully completed a wave of strikes against Iranian military targets”. CENTCOM said the action followed recent attempted attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US service members.
Iran subsequently launched attacks on US bases and assets in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region and the UAE.
The IRGC claimed it had struck the living quarters and command post of the American commander at the US Ali Al-Salem base in Kuwait. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported that the IRGC said the operation demonstrated its intelligence capabilities regarding US military movements in the region.
The IRGC also said it launched a ballistic missile attack on the US Marines’ Camp Tition near Jordan’s Gulf of Aqaba, describing it as retaliation for an alleged US strike on a wedding ceremony in Sirik, Iran, according to state news agency IRNA.
The IRGC claimed several facilities and helicopters were destroyed and that US forces suffered heavy casualties, though these claims were not independently verified.
In Iraq’s Erbil, the IRGC said it destroyed a US surveillance balloon control system and struck other US facilities, including a maintenance centre and warehouses containing technical equipment. It also claimed that several US personnel were killed and fuel storage facilities were set ablaze.
