The death toll from the devastating flash flood in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River has risen to 162, with bodies recovered from several downstream districts as search and rescue operations continued on Thursday.
According to Nepal Police, the bodies were recovered from Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East and Nawalparasi West. Chitwan accounted for the highest number of recoveries, with 64 bodies, followed by Dhading with 27, Nawalparasi East with 26 and Gorkha with 20.
The flood originated in the Lhende tributary of the Bhote Koshi near the Nepal-China border and swept through Timure and other settlements before moving downstream into the Trishuli river system.
The disaster has left several people unaccounted for, including security personnel, tourists and workers associated with hydropower projects. Earlier government figures indicated that 133 Indians were among those missing. Rescue teams have been deployed across affected areas as authorities continue efforts to locate those still unaccounted for.
Nepal’s security agencies have intensified operations, with more than 3,300 police personnel deployed for search, rescue and relief activities. Forty-one injured people were also receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.
The government has also mobilised the Nepal Army to deliver essential relief supplies, including food, tents and medicines, to affected areas. Security agencies and private-sector organisations are supporting the ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
The disaster was initially linked by Nepali authorities to an avalanche and rockslide that blocked the Lhende River. Early assessments also pointed to seismic activity as a possible trigger. Subsequent geological assessments have focused on a sudden glacial or ice-rock collapse and resulting debris surge as the immediate cause of the devastating flood.
The extensive damage and continuing reports of missing people have raised concerns that the toll could increase further as search teams reach more affected locations.
