Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday alleged that the forces responsible for Punjab’s turmoil in the 1980s had become active again, accusing them of adopting new identities while posing as devout Sikhs.
Addressing a public meeting in Malout during the launch of the second phase of the SAD’s Punjab Bachao campaign, Badal said he was prepared to make the “ultimate sacrifice” to protect the party’s core commitment to peace and communal harmony.
Badal alleged that those responsible for the assassinations of Sant Harchand Singh Longowal and Bhai Shaminder Singh, and the attack on Gurcharan Singh Tohra, were active again.
He appealed to people to unite against such elements, warning that Punjab could once again face violence and disorder if they were allowed to gain ground.
“If we do not do this, they will do to you what they have done to me. They will loot your houses and our Gurughar. They will usher in ‘gunda raj’ and destroy the state,” he said.
The SAD president alleged that the objective of such forces was to eliminate Punjab’s principal regional political party. He further claimed that they were acting as “stooges” of government agencies and Delhi-based political parties.
Badal also targeted critics of the Badal family, alleging that divisive elements were opposed to the SAD because the party was preventing attempts to disturb peace and gain control over religious donations.
He criticised jailed MP Amritpal Singh, accusing him of seeking to take Punjab back to the atmosphere of the 1980s. Badal questioned Amritpal’s transformation from a clean-shaven youth who returned from Dubai into someone claiming to represent Punjab’s interests.
He also questioned Amritpal’s adherence to Sikh rehat maryada, referring to the alleged use of Guru Granth Sahib as a shield during a protest march. Badal further questioned his credibility while referring to allegations concerning Amritpal’s brother’s drug addiction.
Badal also attacked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, alleging that Mann had visited the Bargari protest site and Damdama Sahib while under the influence of alcohol. He said Mann had passed an anti-sacrilege law against Sikh maryada but alleged that other political parties had not challenged him.
“This shows all these elements are ganging up against SAD but have nothing to say against Bhagwant Mann or even the Congress party which attacked Sri Darbar Sahib,” Badal said.
