Two people were killed on Wednesday morning when an ultralight aircraft crashed near the Campiccioli dam in northern Italy’s Piedmont region, local media reported.
The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time in the Antrona Schieranco area of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, near the Piedmont regional capital Turin, according to Italian news agencies Ansa and Adnkronos.
The victims were identified as a 60-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman.
Initial reports indicated that the aircraft was an autogyro, or gyroplane, rather than a conventional helicopter. An autogyro has an overhead rotor that is not directly connected to the engine.
According to Adnkronos, the aircraft crashed near the artificial lake of Campliccioli and caught fire following the impact.
Firefighters from the Vco command rushed to the site, supported by the ‘Drago’ helicopter from the Malpensa flight department. Air rescue and ambulance services were also deployed as emergency teams conducted rescue and firefighting operations.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
The incident comes weeks after a separate helicopter crash in Brazil that killed four people.
On August 8, a helicopter went down in a densely forested area near Vista Chinesa in Rio de Janeiro’s Alto da Boa Vista at around 11:11 a.m. local time. Firefighters located the wreckage and specialised teams reached the site by land, while firefighting units tackled a fire that broke out after the crash.
The Brazilian crash involved a pilot and three Colombian women from the same family. Authorities initially confirmed all four deaths but had not released their identities.
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and said he had contacted Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). He also said the city administration had asked ANAC to intensify oversight and safety measures for helicopter flights operating in the city.
