A commotion broke out at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Wednesday after a group of Kanwariyas allegedly breached security barricades and attempted to enter the Nandi Hall, resulting in a confrontation with security personnel and injuries to four guards.
According to officials, around 100 pilgrims from Khedighat in Omkareshwar had arrived at the temple carrying Kanwars. They allegedly attempted to move beyond the designated route meant for devotees and crossed the first set of barricades despite being stopped by security personnel.
Temple officials said some members of the group began jumping over the barricades when guards tried to prevent them from proceeding towards the Nandi Hall. The confrontation caused several barricades to collapse and left security personnel injured.
A video of the incident circulating on social media showed security personnel attempting to control the crowd as several pilgrims tried to cross the barricades. The footage also showed guards pushing back the crowd amid the commotion.
The temple management committee alleged that some unruly individuals damaged barricades and other security arrangements and also attempted to move donation boxes and gain unauthorised access towards the sanctum sanctorum.
“The persons involved in the incident are being identified and legal action will be taken against them,” the temple management committee said.
Four security personnel sustained injuries, including two who reportedly suffered serious injuries to their legs and head. They were taken for medical treatment.
Police personnel at the site intervened and took some of those involved to the Mahakal police station. Investigators are examining video footage and other evidence to identify those involved, officials said.
Further action will be taken based on the investigation.
The Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and draws devotees from across India throughout the year.
