Haryanvi singer and YouTuber Ankit Baliyan was shot dead by unidentified assailants outside a gym in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday, triggering tension in the area.
According to reports, Baliyan was attacked shortly after he stepped out of the gym. The assailants allegedly opened fire before fleeing the spot. Baliyan sustained multiple bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Media reports said four unidentified attackers fired around 20 rounds over nearly two minutes. Several bullets reportedly struck Baliyan’s car, while he was also hit multiple times. Following the incident, angry villagers blocked the road near Verma Market in Shamli, protesting the killing and demanding swift action against those responsible.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the attackers and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Baliyan’s family has demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.
Baliyan was a prominent name in the contemporary Haryanvi entertainment scene, with a substantial digital following built through music videos, podcasts and other online content. His popular songs included “Ek Khtola Jail Ke Bhitar”, “Savidhan”, “112 NE” and “Haridwar Haryane Ka”.
His professional music career gained momentum around 2023, and his work reflected the growing popularity of Haryanvi music that combines regional identity, energetic performances and contemporary production.
Baliyan’s videos frequently featured themes of regional pride, rural life, a “desi” persona and law-and-order imagery. His YouTube presence reportedly attracted hundreds of millions of views, making him a recognised digital personality among followers of Haryanvi music.
The motive behind the killing and the identities of the attackers remain under investigation.
