‘We’re more based on common sense than ideology’: Trump backs ban on Sharia law in US

Washington, August 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

US President Donald Trump has said he would “absolutely” support a ban on Sharia law in the United States, arguing that the country should operate under a single legal system.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck, who asked whether the President would support or sign what he described as a “no Sharia law act for America”.

“On Sharia law, I would absolutely say that it’s not this country; it’s no Sharia law,” Trump said.

He claimed that there were already “pockets” of Sharia law in the US, but did not identify any locations or provide evidence to support the assertion. He also referred to London and Paris while arguing against the existence of a parallel religious legal system.

Trump said he would support prohibiting Sharia law and framed his position as one based on common sense rather than ideology.

“Good politics is all about common sense anyway, but I would absolutely prohibit the Sharia law thing,” he said, adding that where authorities encountered it, “you have to take it out”.

Trump did not specify whether he would seek new federal legislation, issue an executive order or back an existing congressional proposal. He also did not explain what practices such a prohibition would cover or how it would operate alongside constitutional protections for religious freedom.

The discussion followed Beck’s reference to what he called a “Red Green Alliance” involving Islam and democratic socialists. Beck also asked Trump about concerns over the cost of living among young Americans.

Turning to affordability, Trump blamed Democrats for high prices and said his administration had inherited elevated inflation. He cited fuel, grocery and egg prices while claiming that costs had fallen substantially under his administration.

“I inherited high prices, I’ll put it a different way, and we’ve really gotten them down,” Trump said. He added that beef prices were also beginning to decline.

The interview was broadcast on Beck’s programme on August 26 and covered a range of domestic and international issues, including affordability and the rise of Sharia law.
