At least 57 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu are stranded in Nepal’s flood-hit Rasuwa district, where rescue operations have been hampered by rising water levels, damaged roads and adverse weather conditions. The floods have claimed at least 17 lives, according to reports.
The stranded pilgrims are currently in the Timure area of Rasuwa. They are understood to be from Chennai, Kumbakonam and other parts of Tamil Nadu and had travelled to Nepal on a pilgrimage.
Meanwhile, 22 pilgrims from Kumbakonam have been rescued and shifted to a Nepal Army camp, where they are receiving temporary accommodation and assistance.
Helicopters have been deployed to evacuate people from affected areas, but rescue efforts have faced difficulties as aircraft have been unable to land at some locations. Several groups are still awaiting evacuation.
Tamil Nadu’s Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Department is coordinating with Indian and Nepalese authorities to trace and rescue people from the state. The state government has also issued emergency contact numbers for families seeking information or assistance.

The floods have caused extensive damage to Nepal’s transport infrastructure. Preliminary reports indicate that around 19 bridges have been washed away, nearly 40 km of roads damaged and about 200 vehicles swept away, further complicating access to affected areas.
According to a preliminary assessment by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 tourists have been reported missing based on information received from tourism stakeholders and travel agencies. The figure includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalese citizens.
Authorities are verifying the numbers, which could change as communication is restored in remote areas. Indian officials are separately collecting details of tourists and pilgrims who may be affected.
