Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said on Wednesday that he was personally in the Gyirong area of Tibet overseeing efforts to locate 77 pilgrims associated with the Isha Foundation who went missing after a devastating flash flood struck the China-Nepal border region.
According to Sadhguru, the pilgrims were returning from Kailash Mansarovar and were at an immigration centre in Gyirong when the flash flood struck. He said the building and large parts of the town appeared to have been inundated.
In a post on X, Sadhguru said the Isha Foundation’s volunteers and support teams were deeply anguished and were making every effort to assist with rescue operations. He added that there had been no official information about the whereabouts of those who were at the immigration centre when the flooding occurred.
“We are working with the authorities to see if we can get to the location and stand ready to be part of the rescue efforts, regardless of the risk involved,” he said.
Providing details of the pilgrims travelling in 21 groups, Sadhguru said 495 people had returned safely, while 743 remained in Tibet and 148 were in Nepal. He said 77 people were at the immigration centre and three volunteers were in Timure, Nepal.
Addressing families and relatives of those affected, Sadhguru said he shared their pain and that every possible effort was being made during the crisis.
“I am personally in the region to ensure the best can be done in the given circumstances,” he said.
The flash floods hit Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday after the Bhote Koshi River surged, with several people feared dead and hundreds reported missing.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed condolences over the loss of lives. Modi also conveyed India’s readiness to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.
