Three civilians were allegedly killed by Pakistani forces in Balochistan, with a leading Baloch human rights organisation claiming that their bodies showed signs of torture and that all three had previously been subjected to enforced disappearance.
The Baloch Voice for Justice (BVJ) said the mutilated bodies of Hafiz Muhammad Waqas, a Levies official, his brother Mitha Khan, and Maqbool Ahmed were recovered from the Osta Muhammad area on August 24.
According to the rights group, the three men had earlier been forcibly disappeared. BVJ said the recovery has raised fresh concerns over the fate of people who remain missing across the province.
“More than 15 bodies have been recovered in recent days from Panjgur, Mastung, Kharan and Osta Muhammad,” the organisation said, adding that several victims had previously been reported missing after alleged enforced disappearances, while others remained unidentified.
BVJ called for an independent and impartial investigation into the deaths, accountability for those responsible and disclosure of the whereabouts of all forcibly disappeared persons.
“Every detainee has the right to life, due process and a fair trial,” the organisation said, calling for an end to enforced disappearances and alleged extrajudicial killings.
Separately, the Human Rights Council of Balochistan (HRCB) reported 59 killings and 105 cases of enforced disappearance in its latest assessment of the province. The report also alleged a severe military crackdown, including raids on residential areas and demolition of houses, during July.
Of the 59 killings recorded by HRCB, 57 victims were men and two were women, while the identities of eight victims could not be confirmed. The group said target killings accounted for 17 cases, followed by 15 custodial killings and six alleged fake encounters.
HRCB also documented 108 enforced disappearances in July, involving 97 men and eight women, with the gender of three victims not specified. Of those reported missing, 47 had subsequently reappeared, three were allegedly killed in custody and the majority remained unaccounted for.
The report said house raids accounted for 84 of the 108 disappearances, while others occurred during detention, at checkpoints or following summonses.
The allegations could not be independently verified, and the rights groups’ accounts did not include a response from Pakistani authorities.
