At least seven people, including six women, were killed and eight others injured when a private travel bus collided with an auto-rickshaw in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The accident occurred near Adda Road in Chilakaluripet mandal when the bus, travelling from Vijayawada towards Tirupati, collided with the three-wheeler carrying 15 passengers. Four people died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries at Government General Hospital (GGH), Guntur, and another at Chilakaluripet Government Hospital.
The eight injured, including four children, were shifted to hospitals for treatment, with the critically injured being taken to Guntur GGH.
Police said the victims were residents of Veluru village in Chilakaluripet mandal and had travelled to Kondamanjuluru in neighbouring Prakasam district to attend a birthday celebration before returning home.
The deceased were identified as Bontu Babu (62), Bontu Manemma (55), Sampurnamma (70), Gangamma (50), Lakshmamma (75), Choutupalli Swarthamma (45) and Mariamma (45).
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the accident and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed officials to ensure the injured receive the best possible medical treatment and to closely monitor their condition.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed grief and spoke to district officials, directing them to ensure proper medical care for the injured.
State Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha spoke to the Palnadu Additional Superintendent of Police and sought details of the accident, casualties and relief operations. She directed officials to investigate all aspects of the crash, including the circumstances leading to it, the bus speed and any possible negligence by the driver.
The Home Minister also stressed strict enforcement of road-safety regulations for private vehicles to help prevent similar accidents.
