France’s Alex Lanier and South Korea’s An Se Young claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively as the BWF World Championships 2026 concluded with a historic final day at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday.
Lanier created history by becoming the first Frenchman to win a singles world title, defeating Japan’s Kodai Naraoka 21-11, 21-11 in 50 minutes. The 21-year-old controlled the contest after recovering from a 7-9 deficit in the opening game, winning 13 of the next 14 points before closing out the match in straight games.
France had earlier celebrated its first-ever world title when Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue defeated China’s top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping 22-20, 19-21, 21-15 in the mixed doubles final. The French pair, bronze medallists at the previous edition, secured the country’s first BWF World Championships gold.
South Korea also finished with two gold medals. World No. 1 An Se Young regained the women’s singles crown by defeating defending champion Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-14. An, who won her first world title in 2023, took control of the opening game after 17-17 and then pulled away from 11-10 in the second.
Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee ended South Korea’s 31-year wait for a women’s doubles world title, defeating China’s top seeds Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning 21-15, 21-15. Lee, 32, also became the oldest women’s doubles world champion.
China maintained its remarkable record of winning at least one title at every World Championships since its debut in 1983 after Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang beat Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 21-16, 21-17 in the men’s doubles final.
India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand received their bronze medals after their run in the women’s doubles event.
