Newly appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national office-in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh on Tuesday criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal for their alleged silence over the student protest in Jharkhand.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Chennai, Chugh alleged that leaders who had attempted to “politically hijack” the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led student agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi were absent from the Jharkhand movement.
“It is unfortunate that those who kept trying to politically hijack the students’ protest at Jantar Mantar were completely absent from such a major student movement in Jharkhand. The Rahul Gandhi camp and the Kejriwal camp did not say a single word about it,” Chugh said.
“They neither spoke up for the students nor appealed to the government on their behalf. The Congress’ double standards are clearly visible, showing that what it says publicly is different from what it actually does,” he alleged.
The remarks came after students protesting in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations ended their hunger strike following the state government’s decision to cancel examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) and TSR Data Processing Private Limited (TDPL).
Chugh also spoke about the BJP’s organisational activities in Tamil Nadu, stressing the importance the party places on cadre development and training.
“The leaders and workers of the BJP work throughout the year to expand the party. Here, the organisation and the ideology are more important than any person, which is why every person undergoes training. We train our cadres on the issues that the party is working on,” he said.
Chugh said similar training programmes would soon be conducted in every district of Tamil Nadu.
Claiming that public support for the BJP was increasing in the state, he said, “The way people are increasing their trust in the BJP in Tamil Nadu, it is clearly visible that if anyone can bring a change, it is the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan said the party had organised training camps across all 234 Assembly constituencies.
“Today we had our training camp. This training camp was organised in 234 constituencies. So, now nobody will be able to say that BJP is not strong in Tamil Nadu as we have conducted two camps in each constituency, with our party workers,” she said.
She added that the camps were aimed at training party members who would subsequently conduct training programmes at the district level.
