Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), has reflected on watching his father, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, continue to focus on nation-building amid the challenges faced by the conglomerate in recent years.
In a LinkedIn post, Karan Adani recalled being repeatedly asked what it was like to watch his father navigate the intense scrutiny surrounding the Adani Group, including the fallout from the Hindenburg report and proceedings involving the US Department of Justice.
He said there were two ways of viewing the experience — “what a businessman sees, an institution under extraordinary pressure” and “what only a son can see”.
“What struck me was how rarely Papa allowed circumstances to change how he treated the people around him,” Karan wrote, describing this as one of the most important lessons he had learned from his father.
He recalled waking up to new headlines, allegations and judgments concerning a person he had known all his life. While he felt anger and concern, he said what stayed with him was not the surrounding noise but his father’s response to it.
“I saw my father rise every morning and return to the work in front of him,” Karan wrote.
He said projects continued to be built, ports had to operate, power had to reach homes and businesses, airports had to serve passengers, and long-term investments still had to be made.
“India had not paused because our family was living through a storm. And neither did he,” he said.
Karan added that he had never viewed his father primarily as “Gautam Adani”, but simply as his “Papa”, describing him as someone who has always focused intensely on the task at hand rather than public displays.
The past three years, he said, had given him a deeper understanding of his father’s commitment to infrastructure and nation-building.
“For him, these were never slogans. He has always believed that India’s aspirations will demand infrastructure on a scale most cannot even imagine today,” Karan wrote.
The Adani Group has positioned infrastructure and nation-building at the centre of its business philosophy, while Karan Adani currently leads APSEZ, the group’s ports and logistics business.
