Remembering Partition Horrors: Over 300 Sikhs Killed in Forgotten Sheikhupura Massacre

Islamabad, August 18, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The massacre of more than 300 Sikhs at Chak No. 119, also known as Bhuler village, in Pakistan’s Sheikhupura district on August 31, 1947, remains one of the lesser-known tragedies of the Partition violence, according to accounts preserved by survivors and their descendants.

The killings took place barely two weeks after Pakistan was created on August 14, 1947, when a heavily armed mob from neighbouring villages attacked the predominantly Sikh settlement near Sangla Hill.

According to a report published by Khalsa Vox, Bhuler had a Sikh majority and its residents owned substantial agricultural land. Historian Kulwinder Singh Bajwa, a native of the village now living in Batala, said many Sikhs initially chose to remain in the area after it became part of Pakistan, hoping that the violence would eventually subside.

The situation deteriorated as reports of widespread communal violence across Punjab reached the village. Earlier attempts at looting had been resisted, while the settlement was surrounded by Muslim-majority villages.

Accounts cited in Virsa Singh Bajwa’s book ‘Shaheedi Saka Bhuler’ describe how thousands of armed attackers approached the village, beating drums as they advanced. Sikh residents moved women, girls and children into a house for protection while the men took up defensive positions.

The defenders had only a limited supply of firearms and ammunition. When the attackers came within range, the Sikhs opened fire but conserved their ammunition in the hope that reinforcements would arrive. No help came, and around 100 Sikh men eventually found themselves facing thousands of attackers.

As the defence collapsed, the fighting reportedly turned into close combat. Inside the house where women and children had been sheltered, several women and girls, fearing abduction and sexual violence, reportedly chose death rather than capture. Some are said to have jumped into wells, while others were killed by family members at their own request.

The attackers eventually took control of the village and looted it.

A Sikh jatha reached Bhuler the following day, forcing the attackers to retreat. The rescuers found only a small number of survivors. The surviving families were taken to a refugee camp in Amritsar and were later resettled in Batala and nearby villages on land left behind by Muslims who had migrated to Pakistan.

The Bhuler massacre remains a painful reminder of the enormous human cost of Partition, when communal violence uprooted millions and left countless families separated, displaced and bereaved on both sides of the newly created border.
