Gold Worth Rs 1.35 Crore Seized at Kolkata Airport, Two Passengers Arrested

Kolkata, August 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Around 900 grams of gold valued at approximately Rs 1.35 crore was recovered from two passengers at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Monday, following a police operation based on prior intelligence.

According to airport authorities, the passengers had arrived in Kolkata on a flight from Bangkok. Police sources said they had received information about the two passengers in advance and maintained surveillance on them after their arrival.

The passengers were subsequently stopped and questioned on suspicion. During interrogation, they allegedly admitted to carrying gold, following which officers recovered around 900 grams of the precious metal.

Police said the gold is preliminarily estimated to be 24 carat and has an approximate market value of Rs 1.35 crore.

The two passengers have been arrested and are being questioned by officers of the NSCBI Airport police station. Investigators are examining the source of the gold, its intended destination and whether the recovery is linked to an interstate gold smuggling network.

Police are also probing the possible involvement of other people in the suspected smuggling operation.

The latest recovery comes days after Kolkata Police seized gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 1 crore from the same airport on August 6. The jewellery, which included pieces adorned with ruby and emerald, was recovered from domestic cargo, and one person was arrested in connection with that case.

Following the latest seizure, security arrangements at the city airport have been further tightened, with authorities increasing surveillance of passengers.
