Rescue teams continued their search on Saturday for Army personnel who went missing after a flash flood swept away two shelters at an Army camp in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley district, while four workers were killed in a separate landslide in Upper Subansiri.
According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), five Army personnel remained missing after a flash flood hit the camp on Friday following heavy rainfall. Seven personnel were initially swept away, of whom two were rescued.
The Defence spokesperson, however, has not yet confirmed the number of missing personnel. He said a cloudburst in the Pashu Pani area of Anini triggered a massive landslide that submerged the area. Two soldiers were rescued during the initial response.
Multiple rescue teams were mobilised from neighbouring Army posts despite inclement weather and inundation. Army aviation assets have also joined the operation and assisted with medical evacuation.
“All available resources are being employed in a coordinated rescue and relief operation,” the Defence spokesperson said, adding that the search was continuing on priority and further details would be released after verification.
In Upper Subansiri district, four workers were killed on Friday when a major landslide struck the Keojaring-Byaching road construction site, burying workers under debris.
The deceased were identified as Tadu Baki, Taji Rai, Markosh Basumatari and Babul Ali. The district disaster management officer said Ali’s body had been recovered.
Personnel from Nacho Police Station are involved in the search and recovery operation. Fire and Emergency Services teams from Daporijo and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also being mobilised.
The SDRF team is scheduled to travel from Ziro to Daporijo on Sunday and subsequently proceed to Nacho. It will operate under the Officer-in-Charge, Nacho, with assistance from a local guide from Daporijo.
The two incidents occurred amid heavy rainfall across parts of Arunachal Pradesh, which has triggered flash floods and landslides and complicated rescue operations in several remote areas.
