The first-of-its-kind Suryapath Tiranga Global Relay concluded in the United States on Saturday after traversing 54 countries and multiple time zones, carrying the Indian Tricolour from Fiji in the east to San Francisco in the west as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the initiative was organised under the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and began at the High Commission of India in Fiji.
The relay followed the rising sun from one country to another, bringing together members of the Indian diaspora and friends of India worldwide. It culminated with the hoisting of the Tricolour at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.
The MEA said the initiative also commemorated 150 years of Vande Mataram, highlighting its enduring significance as a symbol of India’s national spirit and pride. The campaign received widespread participation from the diaspora, reflecting its emotional connect with the national flag.
Indian missions across participating countries shared updates on X as they hoisted the Tricolour at dawn and handed the relay over to the next mission.
After beginning in Suva, Fiji, the relay moved through Spain and Morocco before reaching Iceland. It subsequently travelled across Brazil, Suriname, Guyana, Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic.
The journey then moved through New York, Colombia, Ottawa, Kingston in Jamaica, Washington DC, Lima in Peru, Toronto and Mexico before reaching its final destination, San Francisco.
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco said the relay’s conclusion marked a collective celebration of 150 years of Vande Mataram, shared heritage and enduring national pride.
Several Indian missions also felicitated top scorers of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz – Independence Day Special Edition, organised by the MEA.
