Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Sunday hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his Independence Day reference to “dimagi Naxalism”, saying he was “proud” to be described as one.
Chidambaram reacted to Modi’s remarks in a post on X, writing, “I am proud to be a dimagi naxal!”
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Saturday, Modi said India had made substantial progress in eliminating armed Naxalism but warned that what he described as “dimagi Naxalism” remained a challenge.
The Prime Minister said people with a “Naxal mindset” were looking for opportunities to promote violence, unrest and disorder and sought to influence society in a negative direction. He called for such elements to be identified and isolated while urging that young people be connected with the mainstream.
Modi’s remarks drew a sharp response from the Congress, which accused him of using increasingly provocative labels for political opponents.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also criticised the Prime Minister, saying he had previously used the expression “urban Naxals” and was now referring to “dimagi Naxals”.
“First he called his opponents ‘urban naxals’. Now he calls them ‘dimaagi naxals’. It is a sure sign of his desperation,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
Ramesh further alleged that the Prime Minister ultimately adopted or implemented several positions advocated by people whom he described as “urban naxals” or “dimaagi naxals”.
The exchange comes amid a broader political debate over the use of the terms “urban Naxal” and “dimagi Naxal” in political discourse.
