The Telangana government has sought stringent action against two men accused of running over a medical student with a car at a mall in Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh, last week, after the young woman succumbed to her injuries.
Telangana Minister for Animal Husbandry Vakiti Srihari visited Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on Monday and met the family of K. Priyanka, who died at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad on Sunday.
Priyanka’s mortal remains were brought to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem examination and will later be taken to her native Eklaspur village in Jogulamba Gadwal district for the last rites.
Srihari assured the family of all possible assistance from the state government and said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy would take up the matter with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to seek strict action against those responsible.
He said the harshest possible punishment for the accused would send a strong message and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
Priyanka was pursuing an MD course at GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram, East Godavari district.
The incident occurred on the night of August 3 when two men allegedly under the influence of alcohol rammed their car into a scooter near the mall, seriously injuring Priyanka, who was riding pillion with her friend Umesh.
According to police, the accused, identified as Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Edwards, had allegedly been denied entry to the mall after staff found them intoxicated. An argument followed, during which the two men allegedly assaulted mall employees.
When security personnel attempted to stop them, one of the accused allegedly drove away at high speed and repeatedly struck the scooter at the mall gate while trying to escape.
Priyanka was initially treated at a hospital in Rajamahendravaram before being shifted to Hyderabad, where doctors later declared her brain-dead.
The two accused were arrested and booked for an attempt to commit culpable homicide. Following Priyanka’s death, police are expected to alter the charges to culpable homicide.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for Priyanka’s family on Sunday.
Her father, Venkatesh, met police officials in Rajamahendravaram and formally lodged a complaint, urging authorities to invoke stringent provisions of law to ensure severe punishment for those responsible.
