Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that his team will not play any warm-up matches before the 2027 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, opting instead for an intensive pre-series training camp designed to prepare players for subcontinental conditions.
The five-Test series is scheduled to begin in Nagpur on January 21, 2027, and conclude in Ahmedabad on March 3, making it Australia’s longest tour of India in five decades. With the series starting less than two weeks after the end of Australia’s home Test series against New Zealand, the team faces a compressed preparation schedule.
McDonald said the team believes a focused training camp will be more beneficial than playing a practice match.
“We feel as though we’ve got enough time to immerse ourselves in those conditions. We won’t be taking on a practice game. It’ll be more about choosing the right location,” McDonald told cricket.com.au.
Australia adopted a similar strategy ahead of its 2023 tour of India, holding a training camp in Alur, near Bengaluru, where local bowlers, including Baroda off-spinner Mahesh Pithiya, were brought in to replicate the bowling style of former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. The team also trained in the UAE before its Test tour of Sri Lanka.
McDonald said the final preparation venue for the 2027 India tour is yet to be decided, with options including both India and the UAE. He stressed that matching pitch conditions and climate would be the key considerations.
The coach also indicated that the squad for India may differ from the group that concludes the New Zealand series, with specialist players better suited to Indian conditions potentially joining the tour. Fringe Test cricketers such as Matthew Kuhnemann, Todd Murphy, Cooper Connolly, Peter Handscomb, and Matthew Renshaw remain in contention.
Australia are aiming to secure their first Test series victory in India since 2004.
While the team will not play warm-up fixtures ahead of the India series, McDonald confirmed that Australia intends to schedule practice matches before its Test tours of South Africa and England in 2027, subject to qualification for the World Test Championship Final.
He noted that practice games remain valuable when scheduling permits, particularly on overseas tours where players arrive from different competitions, including the IPL, county cricket and domestic commitments.
