Over 30 killed in gun attack on northern Nigerian community; student lodge collapses in Anambra

Abuja, July 27, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

More than 30 people, including children, were killed after unidentified gunmen attacked a community in Nigeria’s northern Kaduna State late Sunday, according to local media reports.

The attack took place in Naridon community in Kauru Local Government Area, where the assailants reportedly opened fire indiscriminately before setting houses and shops on fire. Several residents also sustained injuries, some of them critical.

According to The Punch newspaper, quoting community leaders, the assault began around 11 p.m. local time on Sunday. The death toll is feared to rise as many of the injured remain in serious condition.

A local resident, Dogon Rana, whose home was destroyed in the attack, said the gunmen surrounded the remote community before launching the assault on residents.

The motive behind the attack has not yet been established, and police had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of reporting.

Kaduna State has witnessed recurring incidents of violence in recent years, including attacks by armed groups and communal clashes that have claimed numerous lives.

In a separate incident, authorities in Nigeria’s southeastern Anambra State said dozens of people are feared trapped after a three-storey building collapsed late Sunday.

The structure, identified as the Elite Five Star Lodge, primarily accommodates students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said several injured occupants had been rescued, while search and rescue operations were continuing to locate others believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

Local sources said the hostel is often heavily occupied by students, as the institution is currently in the second semester of its 2025–26 academic session.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the building collapse, and rescue teams remain at the site.
