Educator, innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday described the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a “victory of democracy,” saying it reflected the power of peaceful public participation and accountability.
In a post on X following Pradhan’s resignation, Wangchuk said the development marked a triumph of “direct democracy” driven by citizens. He congratulated the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Gen Z protesters and people across the country for their peaceful and persistent campaign.
“From accountability, now to reforms,” Wangchuk wrote, urging the government to focus on strengthening the education system after the minister’s exit.
Wangchuk had earlier observed a 26-day hunger strike demanding stringent action against recurring examination paper leaks, reforms in the examination system and the resignation of the Education Minister. He ended the fast on July 23 at Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital after receiving written assurances from the Central government in the presence of Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh.
Dharmendra Pradhan announced his resignation on Saturday, stating that he was deeply distressed by recent developments surrounding examination irregularities. He said the decision was aimed at preventing anti-national forces from exploiting the situation and reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the interests of students and preserving the integrity of the examination system.
The resignation comes amid nationwide protests over alleged paper leaks and examination irregularities, with student groups and activists demanding greater accountability and comprehensive reforms.
