Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns, Cites Health Reasons

Dhaka, July 24, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on Friday, nearly two years before the end of his five-year term, citing health reasons. His resignation was formally accepted by the Speaker of the national Parliament, according to local media reports.

Shahabuddin, who assumed office in April 2023, said he was stepping down due to multiple health complications.

“I am suffering from various health complications. I have nothing more to add at this moment,” he told The Daily Star, according to local media reports.

His departure comes amid heightened political developments in Bangladesh. Local media reported that his resignation followed controversy over an alleged telephone conversation with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his medical visit to London earlier this year, although reports suggested the reasons behind his exit were more complex. These claims have not been officially confirmed.

Shahabuddin had remained the country’s head of state through the political upheaval that followed the July 2024 protests and the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Earlier this year, he had alleged that attempts were made to remove him from office during the tenure of the interim administration and claimed he had been sidelined from key decision-making processes.

With Shahabuddin’s resignation, the Speaker of Parliament will discharge the duties of the President until a successor is elected, in accordance with Bangladesh’s constitutional provisions.
