Actor Ranbir Kapoor has recalled how his late father, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, often questioned his choice of films and characters, sharing an emotional memory during a special episode of the quiz reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Speaking with host Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir reflected on his father’s views about his career and the different creative approaches they had towards cinema.
The conversation began with Bachchan recalling his long professional association with Rishi Kapoor and asking Ranbir whether his father had ever openly appreciated his acting.
Responding, Ranbir said Rishi was not always convinced by the films he chose, particularly projects such as Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Barfi! and Tamasha.
Recalling his father’s reaction, Ranbir said Rishi would often wonder what kind of films he was making and whom he was trying to reach.
He also referred to a famous line associated with his great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor — “Kala desh ki seva mein” (Art is in the service of the nation).
Ranbir said his father would turn the thought into a pointed question: “Which nation are you serving?” Rishi would ask whether his son was making films primarily for audiences in tier-one cities and question the wider reach of his choices.
Ranbir told Bachchan that he did not fully understand his father’s perspective at the time. He explained that he was following an individualistic approach, choosing characters and stories that came naturally to him and that he could understand as an actor.
Ranbir and Rishi Kapoor had previously spoken about their relationship, describing it as a mix of affection and disagreements.
Rishi Kapoor, one of Hindi cinema’s prominent actors, died in April 2020 after battling cancer.
