The 21-year-old accused in the chainsaw attack on a Class 10 student at a school in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district was injured in police firing on Sunday while allegedly attempting to escape arrest, police said.
The accused, identified as Hemanth, was taken to a hospital in Anantapur town. His condition was not immediately known, and security was tightened at the hospital.
According to police, a team reached the Atmakur forest area after receiving information about his whereabouts. When personnel attempted to apprehend him, he allegedly tried to flee. Police first fired warning shots in the air to make him surrender but opened fire at him when he continued trying to escape. The team reportedly fired around six rounds.
Hemanth allegedly attacked the girl with an electric chainsaw on Saturday at Zilla Parishad High School in Rapthadu. He is a close relative of the student and, according to the account provided by officials, attacked her after she rejected his proposal.
The girl sustained critical injuries and was initially taken to a government hospital, where doctors worked for nearly eight hours to stabilise her before she was shifted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru.
Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh visited the hospital on Sunday and spoke with the medical team about her condition and treatment.
According to an official release, doctors performed surgery lasting nearly 12 hours before moving the student to the intensive care unit. Lokesh said the next 48 hours would be crucial for her recovery and appealed to people to pray for her.
Calling the girl “our daughter”, the minister said she needed support during the difficult period.
