Ahmedabad, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
A live donor heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad aboard the Vande Bharat Express on Sunday, marking the third time the semi-high-speed train has been used to facilitate the movement of a heart for transplantation.
The organ was carried on Train No. 20901, the Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express. It was retrieved from New Civil Hospital in Surat and loaded into coach C-12 at Surat railway station before the train departed for Ahmedabad.
On arrival, railway and police personnel coordinated a swift transfer from Platform 1, where a green corridor had been arranged to ensure the heart reached the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre without delay.
The operation involved staff from the railway commercial department, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP) and state police. Western Railway said it had coordinated with the hospitals, medical teams and other agencies to facilitate the transportation.
The specialist medical team at the U.N. Mehta Institute is to carry out the transplant.
Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash said this was the third occasion on which the Vande Bharat Express had been used for the swift and safe transportation of a live donor heart.
Heart transportation is highly time-sensitive, as the organ must be transplanted within a prescribed period after retrieval. The use of a scheduled train service, along with coordinated arrangements at railway stations and a green corridor for the final road journey, is intended to help ensure that the organ reaches the recipient hospital within the required window.
