A Learjet 60 business aircraft carrying nine people crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday afternoon, prompting an investigation by federal aviation authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the aircraft went down near Cresthaven at around 12:50 p.m. local time on November 1. It had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The FAA did not disclose the condition of the nine people aboard. It said the agency and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would investigate, with the NTSB leading the probe.
The NTSB said it was deploying an investigative team to the crash site in Lake Worth Beach. Investigators were expected to arrive on Sunday and Monday morning. The board also announced plans for a media briefing in West Palm Beach on Monday, with details to be confirmed.
The FAA described the crash location as near Cresthaven, while the NTSB referred to Lake Worth Beach.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said it was responding to an aircraft incident and warned residents to avoid the affected area. Military Trail was closed between Cresthaven and 10th Avenue North. The county later announced an emergency road closure covering the stretch between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane/Alemeda Drive.
As of the latest official statements cited, authorities had not disclosed whether anyone aboard was killed or injured, whether people on the ground were affected, or how many homes may have sustained damage. The aircraft’s operator and the identities of those on board had also not been released.
No cause of the crash has been established. The NTSB will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
