Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and offered condolences over the loss of lives in the flash floods that struck the Himalayan nation, assuring India’s readiness to provide all possible humanitarian assistance.
The conversation came after massive flash floods in the Bhote Koshi River hit Nepal’s Rasuwa region, leaving several people dead and hundreds missing.
“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time,” Modi said in a post on X.
“India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts,” he added.
More than 100 Indians are among 384 tourists reported missing following the floods, according to a preliminary situation update issued by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).
The NTB said the missing group comprises 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. Among the foreign nationals, 105 are from India, while others are from the UK, Australia, the US, Malaysia, South Africa and the Netherlands.
The tourism board cautioned that the figures are preliminary and are being verified through cross-checking with travel agencies, local authorities and other agencies. The nationalities of several missing travellers are also yet to be confirmed.
According to the preliminary information, the missing travellers are associated with nine travel agencies.
The flash floods caused major disruption in Rasuwa and raised concerns over the safety of tourists and other people in the affected areas. Authorities and rescue agencies are continuing efforts to assess the situation and locate those reported missing.
Seven people have so far been confirmed dead, while several others remain missing, according to The Kathmandu Times.
The Nepal Tourism Board has issued emergency contact numbers for tourists and their families seeking information or assistance. These include toll-free number 1234, hotline 1144 and Tourist Police number 9851289445.
The tourism board has urged tourists in affected areas to remain calm, follow official updates and comply with safety instructions issued by authorities.
