The Embassy of India in Nepal on Wednesday issued two emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals affected by the massive flash floods that swept parts of the country, particularly the Rasuwa region.
“For assistance and information related to Indian nationals that have been affected by the flash floods in Nepal today, the following emergency numbers may be contacted: +977 985 131 6807; +977 970 910 7500,” the Embassy said in a post on X.
The flash floods struck the Bhote Koshi River on Wednesday morning, with several deaths feared and widespread damage reported across northern districts including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading.
According to a preliminary update from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), 384 tourists have been reported missing in the Rasuwa region. The list includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens.
More than 100 Indians are among the missing foreign nationals. The other foreign tourists are from countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, South Africa and the Netherlands.
The NTB clarified that the figures are preliminary and are being verified through cross-checking with travel agencies, local authorities and other concerned agencies. The nationalities of several missing travellers have also not yet been confirmed. Preliminary information indicates that the missing tourists were associated with nine travel agencies.
The flooding has caused extensive disruption in the Rasuwa region and raised concerns about the safety of tourists and residents in affected areas. Local authorities, the Nepali Army and rescue agencies are continuing search, rescue and relief operations to assess the damage and trace those reported missing.
Earlier in the day, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to review the situation in flood-affected areas and assess the progress of rescue, search and relief operations.
Shah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the safety and relief of affected citizens and said clear instructions had been issued to subordinate agencies to remain particularly vigilant in low-lying areas and immediately move displaced people to safer locations.
Rasuwa has reportedly suffered the worst damage, with floodwaters sweeping away several houses and damaging markets, hydropower projects, roads and other infrastructure.
The Indian Embassy’s emergency contacts are intended to assist affected Indian nationals and their families seeking information amid the ongoing rescue operations.
