Actor Sudesh Berry has expressed solidarity with singer Daler Mehndi amid the controversy surrounding his performance in Uttarakhand, saying that every artist deserves respect and that no one should be humiliated on a public platform.
In a video shared on Instagram, Sudesh described the situation as “very strange”. He said he had known Daler for more than 30 years and firmly believed that the singer was incapable of the conduct being alleged.
“And if a person does not react, if we are humans, if we are a family, then if we do not react, then there is no meaning,” Sudesh said, stressing that people should show understanding towards one another.
He pointed out that environmental pollution and adulterated food could affect a person’s health, adding that everyone is human and may experience health-related ups and downs.
Emphasising the importance of respecting artists, Sudesh said, “We should respect the actors, like the military should be respected; scientists should be respected. There are some people who should be respected because of whom our society gets inspiration. Daler ji gave music all his life.”
He further questioned the allegations against the singer, saying, “And the person who has music in every breath, and you are accusing that person that he has given you money and you are doing this. This is so sad.”
Reiterating his support, Sudesh said, “Daler ji, as far as I know, for more than 30 years, Daler ji Mehndi cannot do such a thing. He cannot do it. Daler ji, this is very sad. This should not happen. And we should all take a stand together against this…”
In the caption accompanying the video, Sudesh wrote in Hindi that he wholeheartedly supported Daler Mehndi and believed every artist and individual deserved dignity and respect.
He said disagreements or complaints about someone’s performance or work were understandable, but humiliating a person publicly was inappropriate. Such matters, he added, could be addressed privately with respect and sensitivity.
Sudesh also highlighted Daler’s contribution to music over the past 30 to 35 years, saying the singer had brought happiness to audiences through his songs and performances.
“An artist spends an entire lifetime building their identity and earning respect, which is why their contributions and feelings should be valued,” he wrote, describing Daler as a kind-hearted person who spreads love and happiness.
Expressing regret over the situation, Sudesh appealed to people to approach the matter with understanding, fairness and humanity rather than rushing to judgment based on allegations or assumptions.
