Actress Raima Sen remembered legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar on his 100th birth anniversary, describing the iconic star as a “timeless legend” who continues to be deeply loved, admired and remembered.
Raima took to Instagram to share a picture of Uttam Kumar with her grandmother and legendary actress Suchitra Sen. The photograph appears to be from Saptapadi, the acclaimed 1961 Bengali romantic drama directed by Ajoy Kar.
“Remembering Mahanayak Uttam Kumar on his birth anniversary with heartfelt respect. Some artists entertain us; a few become a part of our memories and stay with us forever,” Raima wrote.
She also revealed that Saptapadi remains one of her favourite films, praising Uttam Kumar’s screen presence and emotional performance.
“Saptapadi remains one of those special memories for me—his screen presence, emotions, and unforgettable portrayal continue to touch my heart. A timeless legend, deeply loved, admired, and forever remembered,” she added.
The film also featured Chhabi Biswas and Chhaya Debi and was based on Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay’s 1958 novel of the same name. It is widely regarded as one of the landmark romantic films of Bengali cinema and became the highest-grossing Bengali film of 1961.
Saptapadi was also featured retrospectively at the 45th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the Indian Panorama’s homage section.
Uttam Kumar, widely known as the “Mahanayak”, is regarded as one of the greatest and most successful actors in Indian cinema. He dominated Bengali cinema from the 1950s through the 1970s and became synonymous with the golden era of Bengali films.
Uttam Kumar died on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53. He had fallen seriously ill while working on the set of Ogo Bodhu Sundari and later suffered a severe health episode at a friend’s party that night before being taken to hospital.
