Carlos Alcaraz overcame a slow start to defeat Portugal’s Jaime Faria 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 and advance to the third round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The third-seeded Spaniard, returning after a four-month layoff caused by a wrist injury, recovered strongly after dropping the opening set against world No. 72 Faria, who had recently defeated American Ben Shelton in Cincinnati.
Alcaraz is seeking a third consecutive US Open singles title and would become the first man since Roger Federer, who won five straight titles from 2004 to 2008, to successfully defend the championship. The Spaniard has already won the New York major twice, lifting his maiden Grand Slam trophy there in 2022 before triumphing again in 2025.
The 22-year-old also became the youngest man to complete a Career Grand Slam earlier this year. His latest victory was his 26th US Open main-draw win, giving him his highest victory tally at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
After a shaky opening set, Alcaraz saved a break point in his first service game of the second before winning eight games in succession. He continued to dominate, breaking Faria’s serve five consecutive times and taking control of the match.
Alcaraz struck 43 winners to Faria’s 27 and converted seven of 12 break-point opportunities, while the Portuguese managed two breaks from seven chances.
The victory extended Alcaraz’s Grand Slam winning streak to 16 matches and improved his US Open record to 26-3.
He will next face China’s Wu Yibing, who defeated Australia’s James Duckworth 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Alcaraz leads their head-to-head record 1-0, with their only previous meeting coming in Shanghai in 2024.
