Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history, and wished her continued success in the years ahead.
In a post on X, Modi said Meloni’s milestone reflected the “trust and confidence” of the Italian people in her leadership. He also praised her contribution to strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership and said he looked forward to continuing close cooperation to build a prosperous future for the people of both countries.
“Congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving Prime Minister in Italy’s postwar history,” Modi said.
Meloni’s government surpassed the tenure of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after completing 1,413 days in office. She became Italy’s first woman Prime Minister when she assumed office on October 22, 2022.
The exchange of greetings follows Meloni’s congratulatory message to Modi earlier in July on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. She had highlighted the two countries’ Special Strategic Partnership and their shared efforts to create new opportunities for their people.
Modi visited Italy for a two-day official visit in May, during which he met Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella. The two countries subsequently elevated their bilateral relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership and agreed to strengthen high-level exchanges, including annual leaders’ meetings and regular ministerial and institutional engagements.
The Modi-Meloni friendship has also drawn attention on social media, including the recurring “#Melodi” trend. During his Italy visit, Modi presented Meloni with a packet of Melody toffees, prompting a light-hearted exchange that she later shared on Instagram.
The term “Melodi”, combining the names Modi and Meloni, has become a popular social media reference to the rapport between the two leaders.
