Bollywood veteran Hema Malini celebrated Janmashtami by giving fans a glimpse of her acclaimed dance ballet Radha Raas Bihari, in which she portrays Radha.
The actress and classical dancer shared a video on social media showing her performing graceful classical movements in an elaborate traditional costume and jewellery. The performance also features her troupe and a dancer portraying Krishna.
Sharing the clip on the auspicious occasion, Hema wrote, “On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, sharing a clip from my dance ballet, ‘Radha Raas Bihari’. May this Janmashtami bring peace, happiness and prosperity for all. Radhe Radhe… Jai Shri Krishna!”
Radha Raas Bihari is among Hema Malini’s celebrated dance productions inspired by the divine relationship between Radha and Krishna. The ballet draws on Indian classical dance traditions and has been presented by Hema on several occasions.
Although Hema went on to become one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars, classical dance has remained an important part of her life. She began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five, with her mother, Jaya Chakravarthy, playing a key role in shaping her dance career.
Raised in Delhi, Hema began performing on stage at a young age and later received extensive Bharatanatyam training. She also trained in Kuchipudi under renowned guru Vempati Chinna Satyam in Chennai.
Over the years, she has presented dance ballets inspired by mythological and spiritual themes, including Durga, Meera, Ramayana, Savitri and Radha Krishna, apart from Radha Raas Bihari.
Her association with Bollywood icon Rekha also traces back to their early years in classical dance. In a recent conversation on Indian Idol, Hema recalled seeing Rekha as a young girl attending the same dance classes in Chennai. She described Rekha as “very mischievous” and recalled that she would sometimes run away from rehearsals.
Hema’s classical dance training later became an integral part of the grace and poise she brought to the screen. She began appearing in films in the 1960s, including South Indian productions, before making her Hindi debut opposite Raj Kapoor in Sapno Ka Saudagar in 1968. The film’s publicity famously gave her the enduring title of “Dream Girl”.
She went on to star in landmark films including Johny Mera Naam, Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Khushboo, Kinara, Dream Girl, Meera, Satte Pe Satta, Razia Sultan, Andhaa Kanoon and Baghban.
