Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh shared a heartfelt birthday message for his mentee Abhishek Sharma on Friday, celebrating the young batter’s growth both on and off the field as he turned 26.
Yuvraj has played an important mentoring role in Abhishek’s development, with the left-hander emerging as one of India’s most explosive T20I batters and reaching the No. 1 position in the format.
Sharing a humorous video featuring the two, Yuvraj wrote on Instagram: “Sir Abhishek, it’s your birthday. What an auspicious day. Love the person you have become – sharing and caring for those around you, and a leader! Always learning from your failures and willing to put in more hard work each time! Wishing you a year of runs and tons! Lots of love always.”
The video captured their close bond, with Yuvraj playfully reprimanding Abhishek for attempting rash shots and making him do sit-ups as punishment.
In one exchange, Yuvraj asked Abhishek to promise that he would not attempt a big shot off the first ball. Abhishek repeated the promise while doing sit-ups, prompting more playful banter.
The video also featured Yuvraj, Abhishek and Sanju Samson attending Wimbledon from the stands. When Yuvraj asked Abhishek what he wanted, the youngster replied, “Aapka Aashirwaad,” to which Yuvraj responded, “Always.”
Abhishek has established himself as a formidable T20I batter, scoring two centuries and 11 fifties in 55 innings. He also holds the second-fastest T20I century by an Indian, reaching three figures in 37 balls against England last year. Rohit Sharma holds the Indian record with a 35-ball century against Sri Lanka in 2017.
Abhishek is set to return to action in India’s upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in New Delhi. However, he will be looking to regain consistency after mixed outings against Ireland, England and Zimbabwe.
The southpaw has scored only one fifty in his last 10 innings and has been dismissed in single figures in his last four innings.
